IKANAWTIKET Aboriginal Community
Species at Risk Reference Library CDROM 2008

I recently completed work on a CDROM for IKANAWTIKET (ee-gone-aawh-dee-get) – an initiative of the Maritime Aboriginal Peoples Council through the collaboration of the Native Council of Nova Scotia, the New Brunswick Aboriginal Peoples Council, the Native Council of PEI, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (Gulf and Scotia Fundy Region), and Environment Canada (Canadian Wildlife Service) to serve as a regional Species at Risk focal point for Aboriginal Peoples residing on their Traditional Ancestral Homelands in the Maritimes.

The CD is essentially a website with over 450 documents related to Species at Risk organized into categories ranging from History and Aboriginal Knowledge & Western Science to International, Federal and Provincial sources. It will be distributed to Ikanawtiket partners, contacts, and community members.

The CD was designed with an Autoplay feature that launches the site in a web browser and did not require any special software or plugins (ie: Flash, CGI, JAVA etc) to run.

Last year I also designed a new website for IKANAWTIKET.CA and set up several mailing lists for this project.

Client Testimonial

The Aboriginal Community Species at Risk Reference Library, CD-ROM 2008 is an easy to access compilation of environmental and Aboriginal information, related to preserving and protecting species at risk. The 450+ documents and hundreds of websites on the CD-ROM are all available by browsing the internet, but only this CD-ROM brings them all together for easy access and broad understanding of how species at risk and Aboriginal Peoples in the Maritimes Region of Canada fit into the world-wide movement on the environment and social justice.

We are very proud of this very important IKANAWTIKET resource and educational product. Aboriginal elders and youth, natural resource users and managers, government officials, environmental non-government organizations, and other Aboriginal organizations have expressed gratitude for being able to use this CD-ROM in their daily work, learn more about species at risk and Aboriginal Peoples, gain access to previously unknown documents, and maintain as reference material for their own libraries.

Aaron Allen Web & Media Design developed the layout and programmed the CD-ROM. We are very pleased with the hard work and attention to detail of Aaron Allen to layout and program the expansive and in-depth CD-ROM content. Aaron always keeps the end-user in mind, focusing the layout and content to be engaging, usable by a broad range of users, and easy to navigate.

Other Comments we’ve received on this Project:

“I just want to pass on my compliments and congratulations to the people who put together the Species at Risk Reference Library. Although all connected to SARA, there is much information that is useful in many other applications. Not only is the product full of valuable information, but it is well organized and laid out so that navigation is easy. Take a bow, this is a fabulous product.”

“You did an incredible job compiling a huge amount of information. I recognize this tool is intended to inform Aboriginal communities and it is clearly somewhat ironic that it be used to inform Government but I am very impressed with it.”
